I’m 19 yrs old and have been sailing since I was 6 years old, and competitively since I was 10. I sail scows competitively in the Midwest in the ILYA. I do bow or controls on the A scow “Boondoggle”, bow on an E scow “Harpoon” (J80), and skipper an I-20 (new rigged M-20) ”Volonity” (FD11). I also sail offshore with a team out of Dana Point, CA on a Soverell 33 “Cheap Sunglasses” (87891). I have run 4 Newport-Ensenada races and do mast, spinn. and jib trim, grinding, and helming on occasion. I am looking to get on a large, serious racing boat for the coming season. I may seem a little young for the highly competitive big boat circuit, but I have ton of experience, and I hate to lose!

Hi,
I sailed competitively for four years in high school for a nationally ranked team (AMHS, Charleston) - often as a B-division skipper, but mostly as an A-division mid-wind crew. We sailed mostly 420s, but occasionally FJs, and I have crewed a few times for larger boats. I haven't sailed in a few years but I am in fantastic shape (weight 140lbs) and used to sail five days a week.

I saw your posting on volunteering for a boat crew. I would like to say that I am strongly interested in helping out in anyway. If it means for a couple of weeks I have to scrub down the boat before and after the race and watch from the pier in order to get on a crew, I will do it.
I bet your asking why would he say that? Well here is the run down. My Grandfather, Uncles, Aunt and Father all grew up on sailing and have told such great stories about it being on the lake. From what I am told, they competed in every and just about won every race in Chicago back in the 70's and early 80's. As a kid I can remember going into my grandfather's library in complete amazement with my Dad and looking at all the sailing trophies, plates, and pictures that lined the room. I love hearing all the stories they have told and are telling. Unfortunately, in the early to mid 80's my Grandfather, Dr. John A. Kollar II, was stricken with a muscular desiese which ultimately drew him away from competitive sailing. But his heart lived for it. Knowing that he could never get back on one again he donated his boat, Cinnabar II, to the United States Navel Academy where he knew that it would be raced and taken care of. USNA held it in their Harbor as their sailing team's lead ship up until '97. Since the departure of Cinnabar II to USNA, our family had regressed from competitive sailing.
This past Sunday I was on my Uncle's Boat and we started to talk about how my Grandfather started his crew and it completely blew me away. It was almost all volunteers, as I am sure you already know. Now if I had known that years ago I wouldn't be writing this email. I always thought that crew members had been sailing since they could swim but I was wrong. After our discussion, I became pretty adimit on finding a someone who is willing to teach competitive sailing a person with pretty novice sailing skills. Its inexplicable on how much want to re-continue this family heritage which began and then abruptly stopped. I have heard the stories of cuts, bruises, storms, and let downs that come with sailing. But isn't that what it's all about? I would love to know.
Here is a little info on myself, I am 26 years old, 6'3" and 195lbs. I currently live 3 blocks from Montrose Harbor and work at an Architecture Firm as an Intern. I did mentioned to the principals at my office that I am looking into this and they both gave me their support. They also said that if I needed any time off on Wednesdays to run any beer can races I could have it. I assure you that I will be a dedicated individual to team and that I am willing to do what is necessary to become apart of it. My skills, as I said, are quite novice, but I have been on boats many times and have a good generalization of what is going on. I used to sail a lot in college(mostly a Flying Scott). I returned to Chicago last year after 3 years in the South Pacific as a Peace Corps volunteer. I am interested in spending as much time as possible on the water this summer. I am a teacher and will be available nearly every day starting in a couple of weeks. My name is Jeff Bloomfield and I'm currently serving in the Peace Corps. Beginning September of 08 I'll have nearly one year on my hands before going to grad school, I'm looking to spend that year the best way I can think of. So, I'm looking to crew on a Sailboat once my obligation to Peace Corps ends in 08. My goal is to find someone looking to make the trip from the Mediterranean to the Americas. I have a year of sail boat racing experience on a Beneteau 38. After serving two years volunteering in a landlocked country I'm sure my sailing skills will be rusty and much will need to be relearned. However, I'm a hard worker, quick learner and an all around easy going person. Preferably I'd like to join a crew completing a circumnavigation or setting sail for the Americas while they pass through Greece or Turkey heading east, but I could make the arrangements to join a boat just about anywhere in the Mediterranean. The route or the pace of the journey isn't of much importance too me, so long as the general direction of the trip is towards America. So if your a Skipper or someone looking for a partner to sail around the world or at least 3/4 of the world who will be in the Mediterranean area during the summer or fall of 2008 I'd be interested in talking to you and hopefully joining you in order to help out on board however I could. Former Newport, RI / Marblehead / San Francisco sailor with experience on 12-meter (two time AC winner -- not with me on it), Farr's, a J/120, a CM 1200 (basically a Nelson/Marek 38 -- but somehow much faster), and a Seguin 42 (overall winner of Buzzards Bay Regatta -- this time I was on the boat).
I've been crew-boss, bowman, trimmer, and tactician and am pretty comfortable doing anything, but actually no, I'm not to keen on doing runners, sorry.
I'm looking for a position with a fairly advanced team or a team that takes racing seriously on a big boat.

I am 36 years old and raced in Florida for three years on Morgans, J Boats, basically anything in the 30-35 foot range. I was mainly foredeck, but also trimmed, ground, "flew" the spinnacker (basically went wheverever the captain needed me). I did the Morgan Invasion and also a Race/Cruise from Sarasota to Marathon. I moved to Chicago and raced one summer (did the Tri-State regatta) and the Sunday morning races before "life got in the way". I sorely miss sailing and would like to get "back" into it. Unfortunately, it's been about seven years and I have forgotten a LOT. I would like to do the Sunday races and possibly some beercans. It would probably be a good idea for me to be "rail meat" for the first few races, because I don't believe I would be adequate up on the foredeck, but I am reliable and always have a good attitude.
